Successful landscape design involves knowing which plants grow best in your USDA growing zone. Canton, GA falls into USDA Hardiness Zone 7a. Zone 7a’s minimum average temperature is 0 to 5 degrees. The first frost date is approximately November 15, while the last frost date is around April 15.
Zone 7 is relatively temperate, which means that many annuals and perennials thrive throughout the growing season. Summers are warm and damp, providing sufficient water for landscaping success. Additionally, zone 7a doesn’t see the minimum listed temperatures very often.

Georgia has six soil provinces, and Cherokee County falls into two of them: Blue Ridge and Southern Piedmont.
That means the soil can vary from one part of Canton to the next. However, it can mostly be categorized into two types:
Georgia clay is a thick, heavy soil that derives its reddish color from iron oxides. Most hilly areas feature clay soils and result from hot, wet, humid weather combining with crystalline rocks.
While rich in nutrients, clay soil can make it difficult to dig and to avoid soil compaction. Amending heavy clay with organic matter, composted leaves, and/or gypsum can help.
The low-lying areas surrounding rivers and creek beds contain sandy soil. Sandy soil drains quickly but does not hold nutrients. It also doesn’t offer much protection to root systems. Amending sandy soil with compost or mulch helps slow drainage and maintain nutrients.
Because different soil types require different approaches, soil testing is an important step before choosing your landscaping plants.
Canton is home to multiple planned communities. Most of these communities operate under an HOA, which means there are rules in place regarding landscape design and hardscape installation. Additionally, the City of Canton has Municiple codes that govern certain types of landscaping.
